Up until a few weeks ago I didn't know any of this. So, in NC you don't have to legally begin any formal education of your child until age 7 years. Once I learned this I stopped stressing as much. I also learned that the Division of Non-Public Education "Oversees and monitors all home and private schools in North Carolina, ensuring they remain in compliance with state law." Hearing that makes things sound more serious but the actually process is pretty straight forward.
Check out this resource which has a link to FAQ such has how to start, how to transition to/from public school, testing requirements and so on: https://ncadmin.nc.gov/divisions/non-public-education/home-schools
Skim through this 97 page gem. NC Homeschool Guide Book: https://ncadmin.nc.gov/home-school-guidebook-updated-5302023/open
